Western Cape's favourite lawn

Kikuyu Grass Cape Town

Discover why Kikuyu grass is the number one choice for Cape Town lawns — drought-tolerant, fast-growing and perfect for the Western Cape climate.

About Kikuyu grass

What is Kikuyu Grass?

Kikuyu grass (Pennisetum clandestinum) originates from the highlands of East Africa — specifically the region around Mount Kenya, home of the Kikuyu people. It was introduced to South Africa in the early 20th century and has since become one of the most popular lawn grasses in the Western Cape.

Kikuyu is a warm-season grass with a vigorous, spreading growth habit. It spreads via both stolons (above-ground runners) and rhizomes (underground runners), allowing it to fill in bare patches quickly and create a dense, hard-wearing lawn.

For Cape Town's Mediterranean climate — hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters — Kikuyu is an outstanding choice. Its deep root system allows it to access moisture deep in the soil, making it far more drought-tolerant than many alternatives. It thrives in full sun and handles the Western Cape's summer heat with ease.

Why Kikuyu

Benefits of Kikuyu Grass

Drought Tolerant

Kikuyu grass has deep root systems that allow it to survive Cape Town's hot, dry summers with minimal watering once established.

Fast Growth

Kikuyu establishes quickly after installation, filling in bare patches and spreading to create a dense, lush lawn in a short time.

Handles Foot Traffic

Ideal for families with children and pets, Kikuyu is a tough, hard-wearing grass that recovers quickly from heavy use.

Low Maintenance

Once established, Kikuyu requires less water and fertiliser than many other grass types, making it cost-effective to maintain.

Stays Green

With adequate water, Kikuyu stays green and lush throughout the Cape Town summer, providing a beautiful lawn year-round.
