FAQs – Kikuyu Grass Cape Town

Question 1

How much does Kikuyu grass installation cost in Cape Town?

Accepted Answer

Pricing depends on the size of the area, the amount of ground preparation required and the materials needed. We provide free, no-obligation written quotes for all projects. Contact us with your lawn dimensions and we'll get back to you with a competitive price.

Question 2

What does the installation process involve?

Accepted Answer

Our installation process includes a site assessment, weed removal, ground levelling and grading, topsoil application where needed, laying the Kikuyu rolls with tight seams, initial watering and aftercare advice. We handle everything from start to finish.

Question 3

How long does it take for Kikuyu grass to establish after installation?

Accepted Answer

Kikuyu grass typically begins to root within 1–2 weeks of installation. Within 4–6 weeks, the lawn should be well-established and you can begin mowing. Full establishment — where the lawn is thick and spreading — usually takes 2–3 months, depending on the season and watering.

Question 4

How often should I water my new Kikuyu lawn?

Accepted Answer

For the first two weeks after installation, water your new Kikuyu lawn twice daily — morning and evening — to keep the soil moist and help the roots establish. After two weeks, reduce to once daily. Once established (after 4–6 weeks), water 2–3 times per week, or as needed based on rainfall and temperature.

Question 5

How do I maintain my Kikuyu lawn?

Accepted Answer

Kikuyu is relatively low-maintenance. Mow regularly during the growing season (spring and summer) to keep it at your preferred height — typically 20–40mm. Fertilise 2–3 times per year with a balanced lawn fertiliser. Water during dry periods and apply lawn dressing annually in spring to keep the lawn level and healthy.

Question 6

Which areas in Cape Town do you service?

Accepted Answer

We service Cape Town and the greater Western Cape, including Bellville, Durbanville, Brackenfell, Kraaifontein, Table View, Bloubergstrand, Milnerton, Atlantis, Somerset West, Strand, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Claremont, Constantia, Hout Bay, Rondebosch, Tokai, Wynberg, Green Point, Sea Point, Camps Bay, Fish Hoek, Muizenberg, Hermanus and more. Contact us if you're unsure whether we cover your area.

Question 7

Do I need ground preparation before laying Kikuyu grass?

Accepted Answer

Yes — proper ground preparation is essential for a successful Kikuyu lawn. This includes removing weeds and existing vegetation, levelling the ground, and applying topsoil and compost where needed. Skipping ground preparation can result in drainage problems, uneven growth and weed competition. We include ground preparation as part of our full installation service.

Question 8

Do you supply and deliver topsoil?

Accepted Answer

Yes, we supply and deliver quality screened topsoil across Cape Town and surrounds. Topsoil is an essential part of Kikuyu grass installation and we include it in our full installation packages. We can also supply topsoil separately if you need it for other garden projects.

Question 9

Do you supply and deliver compost?

Accepted Answer

Yes, we supply and deliver quality organic compost across Cape Town. Compost is used during ground preparation to improve soil structure and add nutrients, giving your Kikuyu grass the best possible start. Contact us for pricing and availability.

Question 10

What is lawn dressing and do you offer it?

Accepted Answer

Lawn dressing is a blend of topsoil and compost applied as a thin layer over an existing lawn to level it, improve the soil and feed the grass. We offer lawn dressing supply and professional application across Cape Town. It's best applied in spring when Kikuyu is actively growing.

Question 11

Is Kikuyu grass safe for pets?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Kikuyu grass is safe for dogs, cats and other pets. It's a natural grass with no toxic properties. It's also hard-wearing and recovers quickly from pet activity, making it an excellent choice for households with pets.

Question 12

Does Kikuyu grass go dormant in winter?

Accepted Answer

Kikuyu grass slows its growth significantly in winter and may lose some of its green colour in very cold conditions. However, in Cape Town's mild winters, Kikuyu typically remains reasonably green. It bounces back vigorously in spring with the return of warm temperatures.

Question 13

Can you repair or patch an existing Kikuyu lawn?

Accepted Answer

Yes, we can repair bare patches, thin areas or damaged sections of an existing Kikuyu lawn. This may involve removing the damaged area, preparing the ground and laying new Kikuyu rolls. Contact us to assess your lawn and provide a quote for repair work.
