Kikuyu Grass Winter Care in Cape Town

Kikuyu Grass Winter Care in Cape Town

Cape Town's winters are mild compared to most of South Africa, but the cooler temperatures and shorter days do affect Kikuyu grass. Here is how to care for your Kikuyu lawn during the winter months.

What Happens to Kikuyu in Winter?

Kikuyu grass is a warm-season grass, meaning it grows most vigorously in warm weather. As temperatures drop below about 15°C, growth slows significantly. The grass may turn slightly yellow or brown, especially after cold nights. This is completely normal and the lawn will recover fully in spring.

Watering in Winter

Cape Town's winter rainfall means you will need to water your lawn much less frequently than in summer. In most years, natural rainfall is sufficient to keep an established Kikuyu lawn healthy during winter. Only water if there has been an extended dry spell of more than two weeks.

Mowing in Winter

Reduce mowing frequency to once every 3-4 weeks in winter, or only when the grass actually needs it. Keep the mowing height slightly higher than in summer (40-50mm) to protect the grass from cold and to maintain some green coverage.

Fertilising in Winter

Do not fertilise your Kikuyu lawn in winter. The grass is growing slowly and cannot absorb nutrients effectively. Fertilising in winter can lead to nutrient leaching and may even damage the lawn.

Preparing for Spring

In late August, start preparing your lawn for the spring growing season. Apply a light top dressing, check for any bare patches that need repairing, and prepare to start your regular fertilising and watering routine as temperatures rise in September.
