How to Install Kikuyu Grass: Step-by-Step Guide
Installing Kikuyu grass is a straightforward process, but getting the preparation right is crucial for a successful result. Here is our complete step-by-step guide to installing Kikuyu grass in Cape Town.
Step 1: Measure Your Area
Measure the area you want to grass accurately. Multiply the length by the width to get the square meterage. Add 10% for wastage and cutting. This will tell you how many rolls of Kikuyu grass you need to order.
Step 2: Remove Existing Vegetation
Remove all existing grass, weeds and vegetation from the area. You can use a spade, a sod cutter or a herbicide. If using a herbicide, wait at least two weeks before laying new grass to ensure all vegetation is dead.
Step 3: Prepare the Soil
Good soil preparation is the most important step in a successful Kikuyu installation. Loosen the soil to a depth of at least 150mm using a fork or rotavator. Remove any rocks, roots and debris. If your soil is sandy or poor quality, add a layer of topsoil (75-100mm) and compost (50mm) and mix in well.
Step 4: Level the Area
Use a rake to level the soil, removing any high spots and filling in low spots. The surface should slope gently away from buildings to ensure good drainage. Use a long straight edge or a spirit level to check the surface is even.
Step 5: Apply Lawn Dressing
Apply a thin layer of lawn dressing (25mm) over the prepared soil and rake in lightly. This provides a fine, even surface for the grass rolls to bed into.
Step 6: Lay the Kikuyu Rolls
Lay the Kikuyu rolls in a brick-like pattern, staggering the joints. Butt the rolls tightly together to avoid gaps. Use a sharp knife to cut rolls to fit around edges and obstacles. Work from one end of the area to the other, kneeling on a board to avoid compacting the freshly laid rolls.
Step 7: Roll the Lawn
Once all the rolls are laid, use a lawn roller to press the grass firmly into the soil. This ensures good contact between the roots and the soil, which is essential for establishment.
Step 8: Water Immediately
Water the new lawn immediately and thoroughly after laying. The soil should be moist to a depth of at least 100mm. Continue watering twice daily for the first two weeks.
