How Compost Improves Your Kikuyu Grass Lawn
Compost is one of the best things you can add to your lawn, whether you are installing new Kikuyu grass or maintaining an existing lawn. Here is how compost benefits your Kikuyu lawn.
What is Compost?
Compost is decomposed organic matter — plant material, food scraps and other organic waste that has broken down into a rich, dark, crumbly material. It is packed with nutrients, beneficial microorganisms and organic matter that improves soil structure.
Benefits of Compost for Kikuyu Grass
Compost improves soil structure in both sandy and clay soils. In sandy soils, it improves water and nutrient retention. In clay soils, it improves drainage and aeration. Compost also feeds the beneficial microorganisms in the soil that help break down nutrients into forms that grass roots can absorb.
When to Apply Compost
The best time to apply compost to an existing Kikuyu lawn is in spring, just before the growing season begins. You can also apply it in autumn to help the lawn recover from summer stress. For new installations, mix compost into the soil during site preparation.
How to Apply Compost to Your Lawn
For an existing lawn, apply a 10-20mm layer of compost over the entire lawn surface. Use a rake or the back of a spade to work it into the thatch layer. Water in well after application. For new installations, apply 50mm of compost and mix it into the top 150mm of soil.
